The news, so far, from home is mostly good - Cyclone Ita, it seems, provided good opportunities for cleaning up, securing property, appreciating what we have, building solidarity and enjoying enforced down-time. I guess the other stories will emerge, as they always do, of inconvenience, but no disasters or tragedies - phew!

Haha! My cowgirl's photo's of the farm. Brings back memories.... |

And from my circus girl, her pond has never been bigger. Go boys! |
Today, I heeded the call of the sea and took a boat trip on a Turkish gulet. We left from Ucagiz, and visited the ruins of Aperlae (famous, in my mind now, for first manufacturing the colour purple, from a locally found shell). It amazes me how casual Turkey is about the ancient history that's all around them here - I sat on a Lycian olive press, others perched on ancient walls, and a little boy from our tour group, drew graffiti with a rock on the inside of a Lycian tomb, as we listened to our guide tells us about the Lycian, Greek, Roman, Byzantinian and Hellenistic ruins in the area, and then we wandered at will among them.

Pirates, from Egypt, plundered the tombs, knowing from the Egyptian slaves in Lycia that great wealth was buried with its owner |

From Aperlae, we visited ruins surrounding a beautiful natural harbour on Kekova Island. Some young people braved the 12degee water and swam ashore to explore - I was happy just to send my Tevas off, on my behalf, with one of them....

Note the three parallel contrails in the sky above the Byzantinian wall - made of irregular-shaped blocks |

Then we sailed over the sunken city (destroyed by earthakes, several times over) for the length of Kekova Island.

That's how we looked too |
And visited Simena.....

Guide, Kadir, says the oldest olive tree is 3000 years old, and many in the area are 1000. This one? |

Simena. Beware, an olive tree fascination is developing.... |
Back here at Santosa Pansiyon, our host cooked a delicious BBQ meal (20TL) and now it's bedtime. My plan for tomorrow is evolving....
